How vehicle import duty is calculated
Sri Lanka's vehicle import duty has four components. First, customs duty is applied as a flat percentage on the CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) value. Then excise duty is applied on the CIF value based on your engine capacity band — larger engines attract higher rates, and hybrid vehicles receive a discount. VAT is then charged on the running total of CIF plus both duties. Finally, the Port and Airport Levy (PAL) is applied on the original CIF value.
Good to know
Duty rates change with each annual Budget and can vary by vehicle category, HS code and country of origin. The rates used here are general guidance only. Always confirm the applicable rates with Sri Lanka Customs or a licensed customs broker before committing to a purchase.
